"Change in an interdisciplinary Perspective" will be title and topic of the Summer School 2017, which the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies and the Honours Masters’ Programme "East European Studies" are again organizing jointly. It wil take place 19 to 26 September in the Russian metropolis St. Petersburg. Local cooperation partner is the Higher School of Ecomomics (HSE) represented by Prof. Alexander M. Semyonov, Ph.D.

Summer School 2016: Exploring Belgrade: Theory x Discipline x Method

The Summer School 2016 "Exploring Belgrade: Theory x Discipline x Method" of the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies in cooperation with the Honours Masters’ Programme "East European Studies" took place in the Serbian capital September 23-29. Questions of urbanity and urban life were investigated during the stay with the expertise of different disciplines. The local partner in Belgrade was Prof. Dr. Dubravka Stojanovic of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade.

Summer School 2015: Post-Imperial Turns

2015 the Summer School of the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies took place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The Summer School "Post-Imperial Turns" was not primarily concerned with the evaluation of the research on empires, nor did it aim to develop a new theory of empires. Its objective was to discuss basic theses and questions of the Imperial Turn with reference to the participating disciplines. The imperial past, or more specifically, the post- and inter-imperial presence of the Central Asian Republic of Kyrgyzstan was used as a case study.

Summer School 2013: Area Studies in a Globalized World: New Approaches and Concepts

Area Studies contribute to a nuanced, differentiated and decentered understanding of globalization processes and the entanglements between different parts of the world. East and Southeast European Studies are a case in point: on the one hand, they have experienced a paradigm shift thanks to the incorporation of transnational approaches. On the other hand, they are indispensable for the context-sensitive analysis of historical and present developments in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. One of the particularly promising avenues of East and Southeast European Studies today is the discussion of trans-regional entanglements in order to highlight the specific positioning of the region in the world. This includes also an emphasis on entanglements and relationships within the region.
