[Conference Munich] Re-Orientation. Contexts of Contemporary Art in Turkey and Abroad

20.11.2015 - 2015-11-21

The conference examines artistic production in Turkey from 1960 to today from two perspectives: on the one hand, the artistic confrontation with Turkey's changing history throughout the 20th century will be analyzed; on the other hand, the international integration of Turkish artists will be discussed. The link between these two perspectives is the history of migration understood as a) a part of the national history of the 20th century and b) as the relationship of contact and exchange with artists and institutions in Western Europe and especially in Germany.

This double perspective will shed new light on contemporary art production in Turkey, as well as on the way to or from Turkey, as part of a cross-border art history. Therefore, the title of the conference ”Re-orientation” is not only related to the positioning of contemporary artists within the national and transnational history(ies), but can also refer to the perception and reception of art production in Turkey.

The conference ist organized by Professor Burcu Doğramacı (Institute for Art History, LMU/Graduate School für Eastern and Southeastern European Studies) and Professor Marta Smolińska (Art University, Poznan).
