Forum Lecture Munich with Ondřej Klimeš: Escalating Crisis in Xinjiang: Implications for Uyghurs and China

The talk discusses current situation in the Xinjiang province of the People’s Republic of China. It explains in greater detail the policy shift of previous decades, its reception and response by Uyghur society, the ongoing escalation into violence and terrorism, and its implications for the domestic politics in China.

Ondřej Klimeš, Ph.D., is a researcher at the Oriental Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. He has been researching Xinjiang and Chinese politics since 2000. He has authored several publications on the topics, including an upcoming monograph Struggle by the Pen: The Uyghur Discourse of Nation and Nationalism, c. 1900–1949 (spring 2015, Brill).
