Vladimir Gelman (European University, St. Petersburg): Out of the Frying Pan into the Fire: Trajectories of Regime Changes in Post-Soviet Russia

Many scholars argue that the political regime in contemporary Russia represented one of the instances of the global phenomenon of electoral authoritarianism. But what are the major features of such a regime in the case of Russia, what are its institutional foundations and political pillars? Why and how did its life cycle – the emergence, development, and further decay – change over time, and which ways might it evolve in the foreseeable future? This lecture seeks answers to these questions.
