Abstract

The literature on life satisfaction dynamics during parenthood relies on data from Western countries. This paper is the first one to estimate the dynamics of life satisfaction during parenthood in Russia, a society with different fertility and parenthood patterns. I used the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey data and fixed effects regression to estimate the dynamics of life satisfaction during parenthood, for men and women separately. I also investigated a range of potential moderating factors. The results showed that trajectory of life satisfaction during parenthood in Russia differed from the one reported for Western countries. Specifically, I did not observe the substantial temporary increase of women’s life satisfaction associated with the first childbirth. Moreover, at older ages of second and third child parenthood positively correlated with life satisfaction, especially among parents with lower education and income, living in stable marriages. These results, previously not reported by the literature, point to new fertility-related mechanisms, and stress the importance of replicating studies in new social contexts.
