Born in Plattling. Study of Slavic Philology, also in the Soviet Union (Leningrad). PhD and habilitation in Slavic Philology. Professor at the University of Saarland, since 1994 Professor of Slavic Philology at Universität Regensburg - despite various offers from Kiel, Münster and Heidelberg.
