Am 16. Mai 2017 hält Prof. Dr. Donald Worster (Lawrence, KS/Peking) einen öffentlichen Vortrag an der Graduiertenschule für Ost- und Südosteuropastudien in Regensburg. Im Rahmen des Workshops "East Side Story of Ecological Globalization" des internationalen Forschungsprojekts "EcoGlobReg" sowie der Veranstaltungsreihe "Forum" trägt er zum Thema "Shrinking the Earth: The Rise and Decline of Abundance" vor.
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Donald Worster (University of Kansas/Renmin University Beijing) gilt als einer der Begründer der Umweltgeschichte. Lange Jahre war er Joyce and Elizabeth Hall Professor of U.S. History am Department of History der University of Kansas in Lawrence. 2009 wurde er in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences berufen. 2013 war er Fellow am Rachel Carson Center der LMU München. Seit seiner Emeritierung lehrt er an der Chinesischen Volksuniversität in Peking.
Abstract des Vortrags
The talk will present a new world narrative about the past half millennium, based on environmental history and earth science research. The narrative begins with the conquest of the New World and ends with post 1970 decline in natural abundance and ecological vulnerability. A series of social and cultural revolutions began 500 years ago, caused fundamentally by a material change in the West, but those revolutions are now ending, and a new wave of revolutions is beginning. We have entered the age of a shrinking planet and natural limits.
