Abstract des Vortrags

Three years after the Maidan and the beginning of the war in Dobas, various commemorative projects dealing with these events have emerged in Ukraine, from the Instytutska shrine in Kyiv to the ATO museum in Dnipro(petrovsk). But can working with the traumatic past start before the conflict is resolved, and does the notion of "commemoration" apply to events whose meaning is still deeply contested? Kyiv, Odessa, Dnipro(petrovsk) and Kharkiv experienced the Maidan protests and the so calles "Russian spring" of 2014 in very different ways and with rather different political outcomes. Community activists and local political elites therefore opt for different strategies of dealing with the past/present - from truth-seeking to glorification to amnesia.
