Caitlin Murdock, Ph.D. ist ein Associate Professor of History der California State University in Long Beach bei Los Angeles. Sie beschäftigt sich in ihrer Forschung mit Ostmitteleuropa und vor allem mit Fragen der Umweltgeschichte. Sie ist Visiting Research Fellow der Graduiertenschule in Regensburg.

Abstract

In the 1910s, exhilarated by the discovery of radioactive elements and convinced they could enhance health, Central Europeans flocked to radium spas and bought radioactive water in pursuit of health benefits. But by the late 1960s, many Germans believed that nuclear radiation posed an active threat to their lives and health. This talk illustrates that this transformation was far from just a reaction to Cold War atomic weapons or scientific consensus. A multitude of actors — entrepreneurs, physicians, miners, housewives, politicians, and journalists — made shifting ideas about radiation’s implications for public health a focal point of public debates about the changing relationship between modern states and their citizens.
