New academic cooperation between Rijeka and Regensburg

Agreement between the University of Rijeka, the University of Regensburg, and the IOS Regensburg signed

06.05.2019

On 2 May 2019, Professor Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Rector of the University of Rijeka, Professor Udo Hebel, President of the Universität Regensburg, and Professor Ulf Brunnbauer, Managing Director of the Leibniz-Institute for East and Southeast European Studies as well as co-speaker of the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies in Regensburg, have signed an agreement on academic cooperation between their respective institutions.

The ceremony took place in Zagreb in the presence of the Bavarian Minister President, Dr Markus Söder, and the Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenković. The academic partners seek to develop a variety of joint activities in research and teaching, such as a joint master’s degree program in Southeast European studies, the exchange of visiting scholars, joint summer schools and other research cooperation. The Regensburg side will also participate in the academic program accompanying Rijeka's activities as European Capital of Culture in 2020.

"Rijeka is a strong and dynamic place of research in Croatia, but at the same time there is still a lot of potential  in terms of European research cooperation", Ulf Brunnbauer said. "That makes the University of Rijeka an ideal partner, especially as the connections to Bavaria, where many Croats live, have long been very close."

Overall, the new partnership is supposed to strengthen cooperation in research and academic teaching within the European context and, in particular, to intensify academic cooperation between Bavaria and Croatia.
