Stadtliteratur der Zwischenkriegszeit in Rumänien zwischen nationaler Propaganda und Kulturphilosophie — completed

Urban literature of the interwar period in Romania between national propaganda and cultural philosophy — completed

The city, as the scene of cultural innovations or collisions, plays an important role in the literary life in the area of the so-called "Greater Romania" in the interwar period: the city is regarded as a key concept for newly constructed national images, carriesa new definition of the human being, the culture and society in its literary handling, and is also the place from where the new views are spread politically. How does the new German-speaking minority negotiate its identity? How do the Romanian authors, who were mostly politically active, construct a unified national image? What solutions does the Romanian and Romanian-German modern literature offer for the dreaded deurbanization in the city? Four case studies are highlighted: two Romanian and two German-speaking authors, who were also opinion leaders in the political and cultural field.
