Self-organization in Socialism: The Red Cross in Poland and Czechoslovakia (1945-1989) — completed

In my dissertation I investigate the performance of the national Red Cross branches in Poland and Czechoslovakia as examples of self-organization in a socialist state. I question the dichotomous distinction between state mass organizations on the one hand and non-governmental activities on the other. The Red Cross was rather an actor between these poles. With a tradition since the inter-war period and as part of the international humanitarian red cross movement, PCK (Polski Czerwony Krzyż) and ČSČK (Československý červený kříž) clearly differed from other organizations in the welfare sector. From a comparative perspective, I deal with the tasks of the search services and the junior organizations as well as the management of voluntary blood donation. My work is supposed to contribute to a definition of self-organization in a system that was probably less systemic than previously thought.

Curriculum Vitae

Born in Großburgwedel (Germany). Studied European Studies for B.A. in Chemnitz, Plzeň, and Brno. In 2014, M.A. degree for completing the interdisciplinary Elite Graduate Program for East European Studies at the Universität Regensburg (thesis on non-profit associations in the ČSSR). Since April 2014, associate member of LMU Munich's doctoral programme in Modern and Contemporary History (ProMoHist). From November 2014 to September 2018, doctoral candidate and member of the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies in Munich. Since January 2019, research assistant at the Upper Silesian State Museum in Ratingen.
