Doctoral Project

Die Rettung des Bildes im Wort. Bruno Schulz' Bild-Idee in seinem prosaischen und bildnerischen Werk — abgeschlossen

The salvation of the image in the word. Bruno Schulz's idea of the image in his prosaic and pictorial work — completed

In her doctoral dissertation, Anna Juraschek studied the idea of the image in Bruno Schulz's complete oeuvre from the perspective of Walter Benjamin's philosophy. The conspicuously intensive examination of perceptual conditions and artistic creativity in both the graphics and the literature suggest that Schulz's work deals with the contemporary changes and conditions of image creation and reading. He juxtaposes childlike and adult perceptions in his narrative perspectives, examines modern variants of mythical thinking and addresses the problematic influence of photography and catalogs on forms of thinking, remembering and perceiving. How Schulz's pictorial theory is related to a critique of developments in modernity - such as the instrumental conception of language, the isolated consideration of objects as well as religious belief in progress - can be more accurately grasped by a comparison with Benjamin's philosophy. Especially the re-evaluation of language as a medium of thinking and sharing, the tendency to change, which is common to all objects and at the same time the constancy of certain mythical and religious patterns of thought, for which both are interested in their work, play a major role. The question of the salvation of the image in the word is connected with the possible answers to these processes of change.
