Die Wasserwirtschaft in Rumänien und der Tschechoslowakei: Von Wasserträumen und Wasserräumen im Staatssozialismus. Ein umwelthistorischer Vergleich — abgeschlossen
An Environmental History of Water Management in Romania and Czechoslovakia during State Socialism (1945-1989). A Comparison — completed
One central aspect of state socialist regimes was the attempt to build up a new social order. Infrastructural projects in peripheral regions played an important part in this process. Quite often, infrastructures have a deep impact on nature and the environment. Departing from this observation and by noticing that the role of the environment in the ideology of state socialism in Czechoslovakia and Romania is researched very little up to day, the project wants to shed light upon the environmental history in both countries by investigating water management. For this, several case studies on the construction of dams in the Slovakian and Romanian Carpathians, on the construction of the huge dams on the Danube and on the resulting water pollution from ongoing industrialization processes will be researched. By this I want to illustrate the relationship between the communist regimes and nature in both countries between 1945 till 1989. Two main questions are being examined: How can the interaction between the communist rulers and elites on one side and nature and environment on the other side be described? Which effects had state policies on environment and nature, how were politics and policies influenced by environment and nature? Were there peculiarities in dealing with nature and environment, how did similarities look like? For this question, a threefold comparison is being mad: Between Romania and Czechoslovakia: How did the different state socialist countries interact with similar natural preconditions (the Carpathians, the Danube)? Second with the Soviet Union: How important and influential was the communist? And third, with western, capitalist states: In which way did the interaction with nature and environment differ on the other side of the iron curtain?

Arnošt Štanzel, born 1984 in Erlenbach/Main. 2003-2009 study of Political Sciences, History and Economics in Freiburg und Basel. 2009 Magister Artium at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg with a thesis on energy security in Germany. 2010-2012 position as a researcher at the Collegium Carolinum, Munich and as scientific secretary of the German-Czech and German-Slovak Historical Commission. December 2012 to June 2016 doctoral candidate at the Graduate School for East and Southeast-European Studies. Currently Research Associate at the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
