Intergroup relations in Ukraine
While an enormous amount of the literature on Ukraine focuses on ethnic, linguistic and regional identities, it has rarely been examined how important these group identifications are for the relation between these groups. In my dissertation project, I explore different aspects of this question, such as attitudes towards other linguistic or ethnic groups or discrimination due to ethnicity or language use. Currently, I examine if the war in Donbas has increased the social distance between linguistic and ethnic groups in Ukraine using survey data from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology. This analysis adds to several debates about Ukrainian society, such as the impact of the war on the social, political and economic development of the country, the importance of ethnic and linguistic identities and the nature of Ukrainian nationalism. Apart from a better understanding of Ukraine, the study allows us to learn more about how conflicts affect attitudes towards outgroups.
