Research Project

Isaak Nachman Steinberg: Im Kampf für Sozialismus und Judentum. Eine globalgeschichtliche Biografie

Isaak Nachman Steinberg: Fighting for Socialism and Jewry. A Global Biography

Postdoctoral Project at the Graduate School

At the center of the biography project is the lawyer, politician, publicist and cultural worker Isaac Nachman Steinberg (1888-1957), one of the most important Jewish personalities of his time. The aim is to show the transnational and transcultural links between Jewish and non-Jewish history in the first half of the 20th century based on a critical and "reflected" biography of Steinberg, which is still a research desideratum, and thus make an important contribution to global historiography. Steinberg's work not only spanned four continents and numerous countries, but was also transnational in political, cultural and religious terms - a fact he was well aware of. The focus of the biography project will be the reconstruction and analysis of the various networks to which Steinberg belonged and which he used in his diverse activities, an approach that promises important insights into the global interconnections in the first half of the 20th century. The question of Steinberg's identity plays a key role here: was it an extremely hybrid identity or should we rather speak of a multitude of identities that allowed for different connectivity options, thus fostering Steinberg's ability to network.
