Prof. Dr. Polina Barvinska

Profile

Polina Barvinska is a Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the National I.I. Mečnykov University Odessa and member of the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission. As part of the program "Bilateral Exchange of Academics" of the German Academic Exchange Service, she was a Fellow at LMU and the Graduate School in Munich from June to August 2018.

Barvinska studied history in Odessa and wrote her doctoral thesis on "The image of Eastern Europe in the German-speaking academic environment at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 21st century". Since 2000, she has been an Associate Professor at the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of the National I.I. Mečnykov University in Odessa. Her particular research interests include Ukrainian-German relations, East European studies in the German-speaking countries, the history of the USSR and political memory culture. In her current research project she deals with German-Ukrainian scientific and cultural interactions in the first third of the 20th century.
