Filmvorführung München

Am 27. Februar 2017 präsentieren die Osteuropa-Abteilung der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek und die Graduiertenschule für Ost- und Südosteuropastudien zusammen mit MIR e.V. im Werkstattkino München den Dokumentarfilm "In Search of a Lost Paradise" (2015). Im Anschluss an die Filmvorführung findet ein Gespräch mit dem Autoren und Produzenten Alexander Smoljanski (Berlin) statt.

Der Film — russische Originalfassung mit deutschen Untertiteln — handelt von der zweiten Avantgarde-Bewegung der späten 1950er Jahre und den Anfängen der non-konformistischen Kunstszene in Russland der 1970er Jahre. Es ist der erste Teil eines zweiteiligen Projekts über die berühmte „Lianosowo-Gruppe“ sowjetischer Untergrundkünstler und deren führende Köpfe, Valentina Kropovnitskaya und Oscar Rabin.

2016 erhielt die Dokumentation den russischen NIKA Academy Award (Best Documentary) sowie seit 2015 verschiedene Auszeichnungen internationaler Filmfestivals (u.a. in Berlin, Moskau, Paris, Southampton, Portsmouth, Brisbane, Kalkuta und Mumbai).

Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der Veranstaltungsreihe "Forum" der Graduiertenschule für Ost- und Südosteuropastudien und richtet sich nicht nur an Wissenschaftler, sondern auch an die breite Öffentlichkeit.

The film "In Search of a Lost Paradise” is Part One of a planned two-part project about a group of underground Soviet artists, the famous "Lianozovo group," and its leaders Valentina Kropovnitskaya and Oscar Rabin. It tells the story of the second Russian avant-garde movement in the late 1950s and the beginning of the Russian non-conformist art scene.

This film tells the story of Russian artist Valentina Kropivnitskaya and her husband, the artist Oskar Rabin. It is a story about great talent and great love, which shows what it is like to live in a totalitarian regime, while still trying to retain one's personal and artistic freedom. The story of people, who have created the very notion of nonconformist art, later called The Second Russian Avant-garde; who never betrayed their artistic principles and showed how powerful a weapon nonviolent resistance can be. In 1974, the couple organized a prohibited open-air art exhibition, which was smashed by the KGB using bulldozers. The following day the event was publicized worldwide. In 1977, Oscar was placed under house arrest and shortly thereafter, the family was exiled from the USSR and stripped off their citizenship. However, this historical event forced the Soviets to change their stance regarding art. They came to France without any money and not knowing a single word of French - they nevertheless continued pursuing their artistic passion, and gradually became famous painters.

The legendary "Bulldozer Exhibition" was an unofficial art show organized by dissidents. It was broken up by Moscow police using bulldozers. Later, Valentina Kropivnitskaya and her husband Oscar Rabin were forced to immigrate and Oscar Rabin was stripped of his Soviet citizenship. Eventually the two started a new life together as artists in Paris.

The film is about love and the ability to retain one's artistic and human principles despite living in an oppressive country.
