Marina Mogilner ist Associate Professor und Inhaberin des Edward and Marianna Thaden Chair in Russian and East European Intellectual History an der Universität Illinois in Chicago. Der Schwerpunkt ihrer Forschung liegt auf der neuen imperialen Geschichte Russlands und der UdSSR.

Abstract

This talk is based on a chapter for the book in progress, A RACE FOR THE FUTURE: THE SCIENTIFIC VISIONS OF MODERN RUISSIAN JEWISHNESS. The manuscript focuses on Russian-Jewish engagements with the concept of “race” in the late imperial and early Soviet period. One of its protagonists, Vladimir (Ze'ev) Jabotinsky, the best known today Russian Zionist, has left an influential ideological and political legacy and a long textual trail in a few languages. He defined Jewishness in the debates with late imperial Jewish and non-Jewish activists, nationalists, scholars, revolutionaries and conservatives, using “race” as an important neopositivist political concept. He advanced a vision of subalternity and the critique of empire that in many ways anticipated the later postcolonial discourse. In the talk, I explore the meaning and function of “race” in Jabotinsky’s construction of Jewishness, and his emerging nationalist post-imperial vision of sociopolitical reality, hegemony and identity.
