Madeleine Reeves is a Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester and Editor of Central Asian Survey.
Abstract
This paper draws on research with Kyrgyz migrant workers to explore the queue as an object of anthropological enquiry. In contemporary Moscow, where a majority of migrant workers are partially documented and potentially deportable, the queue becomes a critical means for the allocation of legality as a shortage good. This paper asks what a consideration of queues and queuing might bring to the anthropological study of waiting and bureaucratic time.
